DOES LIGHTNING STRIKES THE SAME PLACE TWICE?

DOES LIGHTNING STRIKES THE SAME PLACE TWICE?

Nowadays, we can hear death cases caused by lightning. Many argue as to what is the cause of lightning strike. But do we really understand how lightning is form? What triggers it to strike a place? Does lightning strikes the same place twice? And what are the following precautionary measures we need to do to avoid it?
Jove,(a.k.a. Jupiter) the Roman
king of gods.

Many of us believe in the saying that lightning was sent by God as a punishment to the  wrongdoers. Some says St. Peter is just playing bowling and whenever he gets a perfect strike, lightning and thunder occurs. Others believe in the myth that Jove, the Roman king of gods, send his favorite bird and was said to carry his thunderbolt of wrath. But the truth is, none of the mentioned stories gives us the true and definite fact about lightning.

Lightning is a big charge of electricity that can reach from clouds to the ground or to other clouds. It can start fires and it is strong enough to hurt or kill people. It is usually triggered by a build-up of different charges within a cloud. When negative (-) charges fills the bottom of the cloud, it send out a "leader" which looks/seeks for a positive (+) charge. As it approaches an area which surely is positively charged, it streamer emerges, meeting the "leader", sealing the connection and generating a bolt of lightning followed by a thunderclap.

Lightning is said to be most common around the equatorial regions of the world such as Rwanda, Africa which was called "lightning capital of the world". This is due to its intense thunderstorm experiences during the months of February - May and September - December.

One thing that bother us is that lightning seems to strike objects  more than any other. One valid example is the Empire State Building in US which is said to be the favorite spot of lightning. You want to know why? The explanation is simple. The taller an object is, the higher the possibility of lightning to strike on it. This is due to the said "leader" is searching for the nearest elevated ground. That is why any tall objects even people can be prone to lightning strike. In fact, a Guinness Book of World Records has recorded Former Park Ranger Roy "Dooms" Sullivan as the world's most lightning-struck person. It was said that from 1942 - 1983, Roy was struck by lightning seven (7) times already.

lightning rod

In a thunderstorm, the safest place to be is inside a large building equipped with lightning rods. On 1749, the famous Benjamin Franklin made an experiment. He decided that he would mount a metal rod on the highest part of his roof. From the rod on the roof he ran a heavy wire to another metal rod that he had driven deep into the ground. He figured that if lightning were to strike his house it would most likely strike the highest point, the metal rod, and the wire would safely conduct the electricity into the ground through the metal stake. An he was right. The idea behind his invention is that metal could save lives and prevent casualties by being a conductor of energy.

Lightning is a strong power to reckon with. Just because an object is hit once does not make it safe from being struck again. So be extra cautious to avoid being struck by lightning.

THE SISTER PLANET

THE SISTER PLANET

Our beautiful planet Earth

Our planet, the Earth, is the third planet in our solar system. It is the only known planet that has life on it. It is man's settlement for over billion of years. But as we all known, Earth is not the only planet in our solar system and as we study science, we discover that our planet has a "twin" or "sister."

Planet Venus in her true color.

Venus is the second planet in our solar system. It's name was derived from the Roman goddess of beauty and love. Scientists claims that Venus and Earth actually looks the same as if they are twins. Their same in size, in gravity and in bulk composition. It was said that it is the planet that "most resembles" the Earth.

Venus being the closest planet to Earth has the capability to be visible here on Earth. It was said that it revolves around the Sun at approximately 1.6 in Earth's 365 days. Venus is in its largest when its between Earth and Sun. They call it the "new phase." When this occurs, Venus is visibly seen on Earth as the brightest star in the sky. But not only during the "new phase" can we see Venus on Earth. Recently, Venus was seen on Earth as a small black disk passing through or across the Sun. This phenomena is called the Transit of Venus.

The 2012 Transit of Venus

The Transit of Venus happens when the planet Venus' inferior conjunction coincides with its presences in Earth's orbit. This is not a usually phenomenon. A cycle of 243 years, separated by eight years and at an interval of over a century is needed for it to happen again. That is why on the 6th of June, 2012, the whole world waited patiently just to witness the once in a blue moon phenomenon transpire here on Earth. The Transit of Venus, 2012, was said to give the scientists a number of research opportunities about Venus and the whole Solar System together with its other celestial bodies. The next transit of Venus is said to transpire on the 11th of December on the year 2117.

This phenomenon is really rare that is why it  must not be taken for granted because we must wait for another century for it to transpire again and we never know if we can still live our lives that long.

Circle of Fire

Circle of Fire

May 21, 2012 - Manila time, the day of the most awaited phenomenon of the Annular Solar Eclipse. This phenomenon was being observed by the entire world since it is said to be a very rare event here on Earth.  Many took pictures of the said phenomenon as it transpires and of course amazement was seen in all of the faces of the witnesses as the eclipse began to form a circle of fire. It was said to be a breathtaking event which is why people who saw the eclipse feels so lucky for being able to witness as it transforms.

solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. An annular solar eclipse can be observed when the Moon moves centrally in front of the Sun, but it is so far away from Earth that it appears smaller in the sky and cannot cover the Sun completely. The Sun's outer edges are then still visible and form a “ring of fire” around the Moon. As said, annular solar eclipse are like the total solar eclipse. They are very rare. They can only be observed during New Moon, when :

  • the Sun is near one of the nodes of the lunar orbit, so Earth, Sun and Moon form a straight line
  • the Moon is at apogee
  • and the observer is located in the path of the Moon's antumbra.

The reason why total solar eclipses do not happen every New Moon is that the lunar orbital plane - the imaginary flat surface whose outer rim is formed by the Moon's path around Earth - runs at an angle of approximately 5 degrees to the Earth's orbital plane around the Sun (ecliptic). The points where the two orbital planes meet are called lunar nodes. Only if the Sun appears near one of the two lunar nodes during New Moon so Earth, Moon and Sun form a straight line can a solar eclipse be observed from Earth.

The Moon's orbit around Earth is not round but forms an ellipse. This is why the distance from Earth to the Moon varies constantly. The Moon is at perigee when it is closest to Earth. The point of greatest distance is called apogee. Because of the varying distance, the Moon appears larger when it is at perigee. Although it is much smaller than the Sun, the Moon's apparent size then roughly matches the Sun's, as seen from Earth. For that reason, it can only cover all of the Sun's disk during a solar eclipse when it is at perigee. On the other hand, when the Moon is at apogee, its apparent size is so small that the Sun's outer edges are still visible and an annular solar eclipse can be observed. The Moon's shadow consists of three different areas:
  • Umbra, the innermost and darkest part
  • Penumbra, the lighter, outer part
  • Antumbra, the area beyond the umbra that is only visible from Earth when the Moon is at apogee.
To observe an annular solar eclipse, the observer must be located in the antumbra.

According to NASA, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the next awaited solar eclipse this year is a total solar eclipse which will transpire on the 13th of November, 2012, Tuesday. It is said to be visible on the Southern Hemisphere of the Earth.
